To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 963:1958 Chrome molybdenum steel bars and rods for aircraft purposes.

This standard specifies the requirements for chrome molybdenum steel bars and rods used in aircraft.

Unless otherwise specified in the order, forging bars and rods must be delivered rolled or forged. The steel must be produced using an acid or basic open hearth or electric furnace process. The steel must be of high quality, suitable for the fabrication of aircraft parts that will be subjected to magnaflux or any other approved inspection process.

The material must be sound, of uniform quality and condition, pipe-free, and free of laps, cracks, twists, seams, or other defects that are detrimental to the fabrication or performance of parts. Cold finished bars and rods must be completely free of scale and surface imperfections. All bars and rods must be made from rough machined or ground ingots or blooms, or they must be roughly machined or ground themselves. The chemical composition of the steel shall be as specified in the standard. Physical and mechanical properties must meet standards. The product must be tested in accordance with the specifications.

The manufacturer must mark the material so that all finished steel can be traced back to the original cast and, in the case of heat-treated material, back to the heat treatment batch.

The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
