Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced a new standard for Cable Trunking and Ducting Systems for Electrical Installations : Cable Trunking and Ducting Systems Intended for Mounting on Walls or Ceiling. These systems are important for accommodating and separating conductors, cables or cords with other electrical equipment when needed. They can be affixed directly to walls or ceilings, mounted either flush, semi-flush, or indirectly, ensuring versatile installation options. BIS certification is mandatory for these systems, as outlined in the BIS IS standard: IS 14927 (Part 2): 2001.

Cable trunking and ducting systems play an essential role in electrical installations by providing organized and protected pathways for managing cables and components. Trunking typically employs enclosed channels made of materials such as PVC or metal to protect and conceal cables, thus reducing damage and minimizing electrical hazards. Similarly, ducting systems consist of organized networks of channels or trays guiding and shielding wires within various infrastructures.

Designed to manage, protect and guide electrical cables, these systems provide structured solutions for routing and shielding wires in a variety of settings. Whether in residential, commercial, or industrial environments, they contribute to safety, efficiency, and organization. Their versatility allows safe installation on both walls and ceilings, adapting to specific environmental requirements.

Tests

The following are the major tests for Cable Trunking and Ducting Systems for Electrical Installations : Cable Trunking and Ducting Systems Intended for Mounting on Walls or Ceiling:

  • Marking
  • Dimension
  • Durability of Marking
  • Construction
  • Access to Live Parts
  • Membranes
  • Glands
  • Impact Test
  • External Load Test
  • Cover Retention Test
  • Resistance to Flame Propagation
  • Electrical Characteristics

Under the ISI certification scheme, all cable trunking and ducting systems intended for electrical installation on walls or ceilings are covered, as per IS 14927 (Part 2):2001. This standard delineates the criteria for such systems, excluding conduit, cable tray, cable. Ladders, or electrical items such as switches and socket outlets. Separate Indian standards apply to these items, including any current carrying components within the system.

It is worth noting that cable trunking and ducting systems designed for wall or ceiling mounting cannot be exported, imported or sold in the Indian consumer market without ISI Mark.
